Please note, this is a high level offer. Practicalities: I live in Amsterdam, Holland and do NOT run a travel agency.  I do however provide Fabulous international museum tours. The plan is that you contract me for one or more days as your private ‘Professor’ and offer full transport to that city, plus (if needed) hotel accommodation in the same place you will stay. We will spend quality time together in mornings and early afternoons. Please book a time slot ticket for yourself and for the guide. New: Private Audio system available.

1. Expensive option: You can hire me and I will fly in to be your own outstanding private “Professore”. At your cost, I will fly in especially for you (or take the high speed train) and I will guide you after spending a hotel night. And then a very memorable museum visit or two.

2. Less expensive option: I know many first-rate art historian colleagues all over Western Europe. Therefore I know just the company/guide to arrange an excellent museum visit for you. I work very closely with these art history women and men and they are brilliant.

Lille or Rijsel? The Netherlandish peoples are still slightly piqued that the city of Rijsel was occupied by the troops of French king Louis XIV, stolen and then renamed Lille. Presently Lille is a former industrial city that has lost most of its industry, looking a bit run down at the seams.

The number two museum in France? Really? One may agree or disagree with the label as the number 2 museum of Fine Arts in France, but in all cases it has some extremely interesting works of fine painting, a good mediaeval section in the basement and a more than weird and wonderful selection of life-size sculpture.

My favourite 5 1/2-star painting of the museum is the harrowing Goya painting of two old ladies, “Las Viejas” or “The old girls”. Actually they could be portraying decaying old prostitutes. They are both gazing in a hand-held mirror on which the words “?Que tal?” meaning “How’s things?”.  The female on the right, toothless with age,  is dressed in a light blue muslin robe and she is holding a powder compact. Her hair is adorned with an arrow set with fake diamonds. Behind the two is Father Time, ultimate winner, this time not with a scythe but with a broom, ready to sweep them aside. Next to this scary painting is its pendant, “The Yong Ones”, a girl and her maid with fleeting beauty. She is reading a letter – from her lover? A miniature dog full of longing has his paws up at her skirt. In the background laundresses at work, kneeling down. (Note: Robert Hughes, Goya, page 348.)

Angel or Eros, and in background a painting by Hebee. Lille Museum.
