Rijksmuseum Specialty Tour 2: Christian Mediaeval Art and later Christian-inspired art
Christian art permeated all aspects of daily life of nearly all citizens in the middle ages and was a central value for the fabric of society from about the year 300 up to the 18th Century, the Age of Enlightenment. In this specialist Rijksmuseum tour we start in the Middle ages around 1300 and discuss age-old Christian imagery, and discuss the role these objects play in that faith-infused society. We will also discuss what happend around 1615 when a rebel Haarlem artists spoke out in pubs, and denied faith, Christ, devil and was arrested for this dangerous negation. We also discuss what happened here after 1900 and 1960 when churches emptied out wholesale in Holland.
Focus on: Christian art, bible stories / biblical characters, old testament, new testament.
For another day: a GREAT museum for Christian art is the Catharijneconvent in Utrecht.
