Liotard, Girl serving Chocolate drink, the new-fangled fashion.

The Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister displays around 750 paintings from the 15th to the 18th centuries. It represents 40 percent of the entire collection.

Augustus II the Strong, elector of Saxony, and his son Frederick Augustus II started to collect paintings systematically. During some 60 years, these two, who were also Kings of Poland, expanded the collections significantly. In 1745, the 100 best pieces of the collection belonging to the Duke of Modena (Francesco III) were purchased. Agents scoured the capitals: Paintings from all over Europe, especially from Italy, and from Paris, Amsterdam and Prague, were acquired for Dresden. The purchasing activities reached a summit in Raphael’s Sistine Madonna, successfully bought in 1754.

Vermeer, The Procuress, scene in a Brothel, see the booklet printed after a wonderful restoration.

Van Eyck tryptich. There are very few comparable grade A paintings by Van Eyck in the entire world.

Extensive Dutch collections.
