Join me for a visit to the Alte Pinakothek (Old Masters Paintings museum) Munich, Germany.      I will be your private professor, travelling in from Amsterdam, Holland specially for you. Tour by Drs Kees Kaldenbach, a professional Art History scholar with excellent teaching skills. Specialist in Fine art and Design, Architecture and History. VIP entry. Entry best at from 9 or 10AM. Practicalities: I live in Amsterdam, Holland and do NOT run a travel agency.  I do however provide Fabulous international museum tours. The plan is that you contract me for one or more days as your private ‘Professor’ and offer full transport to that city, plus hotel accommodation in the same place you will stay. We will spend quality time together in mornings and early afternoons.

Expensive option: You can hire me and I will fly in to be your own outstanding private “Professore”. At your cost, I will fly in especially for you and I will guide you after spending a hotel night. And then a very memorable museum visit or two.

 

Under the umbrella of the Bavarian State Collection, three collections exist: The name Alte (Old) Pinakothek refers to the time period covered by the collection (from the fourteenth to the eighteenth century), the New Paintings Collection (19th century) and the Modern Painting museums (20th and 21st centuries.

As a core, the Old Pinakothek contained the Wittelsbach art collection, mainly purchased by Duke Wilhelm IV (see the Battle by Altdorfer below). Elector Maximilian I purchased very good Düerer works.  Maximilian II, in his days governor of the Spanish Netherlands, bought many good Dutch and Flemish paintings, notably 12 ones from the private collection of Rubens. Palatine Elector Johann Wilhelm continued collecting Netherlandish paintings. During the Napoleonic war years, some paintings ended up in French collections.

Purpouse-built architecture by Leo von Klenze, in a very large and modern design, specifically  for housing this outstanding art gallery. The largest room had to fit Rubens’ “Last Judgment” (1617), an outsize canvas. The museum building was partly destroyed in WW2 and rebuilt in a sleek manner in the late 1950s.

In November 2019 Sally Ross, painter from Australia and Drs Kees Kaldenbach, art historian, travelled together in for a week in Germany, visiting numerous art museums and galleries in Munich, Berlin and Frankfurt. We did an Intensive Art Immersion visiting the best art museums.
