In better times, after re-opening: Join me for a visit to the outstanding Painting Gallery: Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister, Schloss Wilhelmshöhe, Kassel.       I will be your private professore, travelling in from Amsterdam, Holland specially for you. Tour by Drs Kees Kaldenbach, a professional Art History scholar with excellent teaching skills. Specialist in Fine art and Design, Architecture and History. VIP entry. Entry best at from 9 or 10AM. We will spend quality time together in mornings and early afternoons.

Landgraf Wilhelm II collected a cabinet of natural and man-made curiosities, a Schatz- und Wunderkammer. Landgraf Wilhelm VIII amassed the core holdings of paintings for this great museum. Very strong on Dutch and Flemish art of the seventeenth century. Great names he added with major works are Rembrandt, Frans Hals, Rubens, Anthonis and Floris van Dyck,  Jacob Jordaens, each with a room of their own.  Wilhelm VIII made a ‘kill’ in buying the cabinet of art lover Valerius Röver.

Napoleonic wars caused the loss of parts of the collection. Some groups ended up in the Hermitage, St Petersburg.
