I will show you my image bank of paintings inside. And give you a high quality tour. 100 Must-see pictures.

HUGE list of museums for digital visits via my photo files + Zoom.

In better times, after re-opening: A visit with your own art historian, flying in for you. Please book a time slot ticket for yourself and for the guide. New: Private Audio system available.

Old, rich, ugly versus young, poor and beautiful: Unequal love.

Join me for a visit to the unique, seldom visited  Staatliche Kunsthalle Karlsruhe, Germany.    I will be your private professore, travelling in from Amsterdam, Holland specially for you. Tour by Drs Kees Kaldenbach, a professional Art History scholar with excellent teaching skills. Specialist in Fine art and Design, Architecture and History. VIP entry. Entry best at from 9 or 10AM. Please note, this is a high level offer. Practicalities: I live in Amsterdam, Holland and do NOT run a travel agency.  I do however provide Fabulous international museum tours.

The plan is that you contract me for one or more days as your private ‘Professor’ and offer full transport to that city, plus hotel accommodation in the same place you will stay. We will spend quality time together in mornings and early afternoons.

1. Expensive option: You can hire me and I will fly in to be your own outstanding private “Professore”. At your cost, I will fly in especially for you and I will guide you after spending a hotel night. And then a very memorable museum visit or two.

2. Less expensive option: I know many first-rate art historian colleagues all over Western Europe. Therefore I know just the company/guide to arrange an excellent museum visit for you. I work very closely with these art history women and men and they are brilliant.

Have you ever come across an art museum with fairly low expectations and leaving it almost drunk with elation? This is your ticket!  An added bonus is that very few people visit this museum, so we have the halls practically to ourselves.

In this museum you will discover large collections of high quality paintings spanning many Western schools. Initially collected during centuries by local rulers: the Markgrafen von Baden, including Friedrich VI von Baden-Durlach. Later on Princess Karoline Luise also diligently collected Dutch art; paintings she desired were those with a “high finish”.

In the 19th century section the painter Hans Thoma is well represented, having created a complete “surround” chapel with 360 degrees of religious imagery. Great Anselm Feuerbach set of paintings as well, including self portraits and a XXL masterpiece. German Romanticism at its best.

Thoma-Chapel Kunsthalle. Although non-christian, it is almost a sacred art space. Mid 19th C painter Hans Thoma.

Master of Karlsruhe, Deposition from the Cross. Stark realism.

Part of the Thoma-Kapelle.

Unequal Couple, Woman with coins in her lap. Old man ready to grab her.

Element of the Thoma-Kapelle.

Anselm Feuerbach: Great artist. Great ego. Self portrait.

A painter called Koch. Interesting landscape, cloudscape.

Coypel, design in gray paint as a preparation image for an engraving.

Coypel, design for engraving. Detail

In 2012, during my study tour through Southern Germany, I visited this main museum of Karlsruhe: Staatliche Kunsthalle. Fab collection of graphic art / art on paper, and a vast collection of very good paintings.

The large painting shown here, by Coypel, is a crossover between painting and graphic arts because Colpel’s painting was made as an image for an engraver to work on, in order to create a highly finished and perfect plate for prints. Beautiful new recent acquisition.

Funny event: at the Karlsruhe Railway station I asked the tramway ticket person where the most important museum was located. She did not have a clue. “Go ask the Tourist Information!”
