Vermeer, one of the 36 in existence.

The Städel, officially the Städelsches Kunstinstitut und Städtische Galerie, is an art museum in Frankfurt, on the bank of the river Main. Clearly one of the most important collections in Germany, the Städel owns 2,700 paintings (of which 600 are on display) and a collection of 100,000 drawings and prints as well as 600 sculptures. It was started by private, civic action.

The institute was founded 1815 by the local banker and merchant Johann Friedrich Städel. In 1878, a new museum building was designed in the German Gründerzeit style.

These days there is a a major digital outreach as well.
